Sex is Natural, Sexuality is Not

Sex is Natural, Sexuality is Not

Sex is a simple phenomenon as hunger or thirst

Sex is beautiful, sexuality is ugly, and the difference has to be understood. Sex is a natural phenomenon. Sexuality is unnatural, abnormal and pathological. When sex becomes cerebral, when sex enters in your head, it becomes sexuality.

Now, the head is not the center for sex. It is getting into confusion, it is getting upside down, it is getting deranged. Sex is not the function of the head, but when sex enters in through the head it becomes sexuality. Then you think about sex, then you fantasize about sex. And the more you think, the more you fantasize about it, the more you will get into trouble because then nothing real will ever satisfy you because there is no limitation on fantasy, and reality is limited.

For example, if you start thinking too much about sex you can create beautiful women – women which are only your fantasy; you will never find them anywhere in the world. Or men…you will never come across them. No real woman or man will ever satisfy you because of the fantasy. No real man or woman can fulfill your expectations of fantasy. Fantasy is fantasy; it is a dream.

You can fantasize a woman who does not perspire, whose body has no body odor. You can fantasize a woman who is always sweet and never bitter. You can fantasize a woman who is always loving and warm and welcoming and never nags you and is never angry, never throws pillows at you. You can fantasize a woman who never ages, who remains always stuck at eighteen years of age – who is always fresh, always young, always beautiful, never falls ill, never makes any demands on you, never betrays you, never looks at any other man with longing, with desire. You can fantasize to no limit, but you will not find this woman anywhere. Now you have created a problem – you are no longer naturally attuned to your sex.

Nature is perfectly capable to be fulfilled, but fantasy cannot be fulfilled. You may find your woman in girly magazines, in pornographic books, but you will not find her in reality. And whosoever you will find in reality will fall short.

That is the problem the West is facing – it has fantasized too much about sex. The West has become sexual through fantasy; the East has become sexual through repression. Both have become sexual and both have lost the natural capacities of enjoying sex. Both have become pathological through different routes. The West has become pathological by fantasizing sex as being the ultimate goal of life, and the East has become pathological by thinking that sex is the ultimate barrier between godliness and man.

Sex is neither: neither is it the ultimate goal nor the ultimate barrier. Sex is a simple phenomenon as hunger or thirst; there is nothing more to it. Neither is it what the Eastern mind has been thinking about it. The Eastern mind is too afraid of sex. Out of fear, sex has moved into the head; through the door of fear it entered into the head.
So the Eastern so-called saints are simply fantasizing about sex because they have repressed it. And that which you repress goes on coming up again and again. It cannot be destroyed; nothing can ever be destroyed by repression. Repression makes sex pathological sexuality. This is one extreme.

The West has moved to another extreme. The other extreme is, fantasize about it. Sex is all, everything else is secondary, so have as much sex as you can. But you cannot have too much sex. There are limitations to the body, but you can fantasize as much as you want, there is no limitation to it. So pornography exists, blue films exist, girly magazines exist, and people are being fed on these illusory mirages. Then no woman, no real man will ever satisfy you.

These are both pathological states. Sexuality is pathological; whether you come to it through greed or fear does not matter. The East has become ill through fear; the West has become ill through greed. Greed and fear are two aspects of the same coin. So on the surface it looks very different, that the East and the West are poles apart. They are not. Those who know, those who can see, can see that it is the same foolishness, the same stupidity. They have arrived to the same stupidity from different doors, that is true, but they have entered into the same place. And both have to be awakened, and both have to be made more enlightened about sex.

Don’t make much fuss about sex either way, that is the first fundamental. If you want sex to become love, the first fundamental is accept sex as an absolutely natural phenomenon. Don’t bring your metaphysics to it, don’t bring your religion to it. It has nothing to do with religion or metaphysics, it is a simple fact of life. It is a way life produces itself. It is as simple as the trees bringing flowers and fruits – you don’t condemn the flowers. Flowers are sex; it is through the flowers that the tree is sending its seeds, its potentiality, to other trees.

When a peacock dances you don’t condemn it, but the dance is sex; it is to attract the female. When the cuckoo calls you don’t condemn it; it is sex. The cuckoo is simply declaring, “I am ready.” The cuckoo is simply calling forth the woman. The sound, the beautiful sound, is just a seduction; it is courtship.

If you watch life you will be surprised. The whole of life is through sex. Life reproduces itself through sex. It is a natural phenomenon, don’t drag unnecessary rationalizations into it.

This is the first thing to be understood if you ever want any transformation of sex energy. The first thing is don’t deny it, don’t reject it, don’t repress it. Don’t be too greedy about it, don’t think that this is all – this is not. There is much more to life. And sex is beautiful. Still, there is much more to life, sex is only the foundation, it is not the whole temple.
Repressed, it becomes sexuality. Fantasized, it becomes sexuality. One is an Eastern way of transforming sex into pathology, the other is a Western way. But nobody, either in the East or in the West, accepts that sex is a simple natural phenomenon. Neither the saints nor the sinners – nobody accepts sex to be a simple natural phenomenon. Both are obsessed with it, hence I say both are not different. Sex accepted, respected, lived, becomes love.

I agree with this 100%. I know a lot of people who are obsessed with their sexuality. Even a lot of erotic artists, and all of them only experience it in their head. Nothing more, and they even glorify it!

MR OSHO: THE SEX BETWEEN two PEOPLE OF THE SAME SEX DOESN’T GIVE LIFE. IT DOESN’T COMPARE WITH YOU EXAMPLE ABOUT THE TREE AND THE SEED. SO, YOU ARE TELLING AS THIS PRACTICE IS SEXUALITY? OR FANTASIZE?

    • http://www.facebook.com/jacknamductran Gabriel Nam Duc Tran

Martina, i can see your real point in this age, 23 years after Osho death. He didn’t give all full clear information that readers need at this moment, and for sure the next 20 to 50 years, there will be much change on people mind, feel toward sex. For sure here, Osho is an older eastern man who is also a heterosexual as i rarely read any part of his books mentions about homosexual. However, the picture here he painted is all about natural phenomena of the two different sexes in the general living being defined of male and female. It is somehow reflecting truth from his view point in his scope of argument. The fundamental truth of nature to function for different sexes is reproduction, we should accept this as a truth for most species beside some other species multiplex their population as bisexual ability, i mean they have two different sexes. But they seem rare and in the less complicated living forms. Beside our sex main role of reproduction which must come from the two different sexes between male and female intercourse or their sexual productions come to integrate to be able to deliver new generation before and after some requisite causes and effects condition satisfied, how ever sex is also further than that, it is also active in homosexual people, they are attractive to same sex people, they can get sexual arousal ,intercourse or sexual actions just like heterosexual people do, and it is totally natural, and sometimes they even have more quality of sexuality than heterosexuality do, but then it isn’t about bringing more reproduction which is natural for maintaining their population. It is more spiritual than just the reproduction that with larger population who carry out this function, they carry out it too successfully that human was and are able to multiply 3 times its population within 40-50 years, and it causes serious damages to environment, social violence, division and wars and even threatening to human existence. So in this sense, homosexuality is in-fact helps in keeping general population in check, not too much and becomes more integration between people with people in more intimate regardless of different sexes as a must in people mold mind. Back to the sex, sometimes it is not just for reproduction, but it is for peace, equality between same sex people who wish to share their life and sexuality together… However, the point here isn’t just about that, it is about not to repress or fantasize about sex regardless of the reproduction and genders, and people can enter any prefer relationship in their personal sexual acceptance with love and unconditional compassion in. And we should realize that our body matter is not able to cope with excessive mind sexual desires, if you fantasize sex too much, you will be obsessive with sex, long sex period of time, multiple sex consecutive… and your body health will soon run out, fail your own desires, you will fall into a state of mental sexual sickness with a sick body or you will isolate yourself cause your fantasize perfect sexual partners which you rarely can meet or even never can meet, you will have sex with your TV, your computer, your sex internet, sex toys… And in another fact, sex is not lasting long either, its action can last vary from few seconds to few hours or a day or two is maximum. But it will create a habit which will demand for more and more, and then if you and make us become addict to it, we will always looking to satisfy it. But the mind has its endless bounder to be satisfied, then we will suffer. But if you repress sex, you will end up having it full of your head like a air wheel, having unprotected sex, hidden sex, even rapes and damage other people, sinful sex, and over population of less understanding about sex, for religious people, they feel shameful, sinful about sex , so they will end up with depression, having wicked sex, hidden sex and it hamper their spiritual practice, purity mind… As when you feel sinful, duty from your acts, it can not be possible to achieve mind purity, an important factor to liberation and happiness.

So it is important here again is to accept sex is natural, regardless of genders, reproduction. People should not reject it, and we can have sex as a balance, open to personal preference, unity between people…As it is physical and spiritual phenomena in living being and not to let your culture define it, rule it, but rather be understanding it, receive it in a balance, acting wisely up on its calls… Perceiving of the impermanence, we will never can get anything forever lasting, so why are we wasting our precious life to look for thing that end quickly after an action? Our mind is more valuable to be used to bring us true happiness from liberation, a state when we are no longer slave for any demand, once we have fully understood nature of things, we will act wisely as a Buddha.

This is deeply disturbing. These terms you use are dangerous and emerge from a fundamentally racist and imperialist ideology. What is the East? What is the West? Are you really dividing billions of people and thousands of cultures into two amorphous constructs? Do you even know the roots of these constructs? What is natural? What is unnatural? You imply that reproduction is natural? Is sex without reproduction unnatural? This is essay is so racist, sexist, homophobic, and anti-human. Who wrote this?

    • Meg

Author of these words no longer exists in this world but still, his words are so disturbing, even quite many years after he’s gone. I think he just uses symbolic names for East and West to generalize his observations about cultures of the world. And maybe to piss off some people :P

East versus west has been used in eastern based spiritual texts for many many many years. Yes it’s a generalization, and oversimplified. But life doesn’t have to be as complex and disturbing as the lenses your kind sees everything through. o wait- you have never read any spiritual texts you say? Oooooo. I see your misunderstanding. Your a western mindset.

Well, perhaps his reason for putting it as a “natural phenomenon” is to allow your mind to get out of the way of itself, thus, allowing you to experience sex truthfully. Many people experience sex only through the lens of their ego (i.e. a way of personal validation or an attachment to pleasure sensations). They don’t allow sex to unfold naturally within the body while it’s happening.

Don’t focus on what you can find wrong with this, try to get the point.

There are 200 and above countries, and our countries are divided into continents, there are seven continents , like Europe, Asia, each human being is divided . No single one is the same. when we address a country we generally call it is a country in the east, when we address a country in the west we address it as west. we have constructed all this, why would we humans construct these all things in this world , what is the root, can you tell me please, if reproduction without sex is possiblethen would you condemn it? you are a psychopolist, with pollen grains, answer me?

This has to be one of the most unfocused pieces I’ve ever read. It jumps back and forth with ideas but does not elaborate. I can imagine the young reader, presented with said ideas, latching onto them, proclaiming them their own, yet knowing nothing of their foundation. The first sentence was a dead giveaway. “Sex is beautiful, sexuality is ugly…” Oh really? Prove it. Prove to me how subjective human emotions can apply to such large, ambiguous ideas.

    • ken

Dude…Going by what you wrote looks like you have no insight of fundamentals of human behavior and nuances and subtlety of the same….Don’t trouble your simple mind too much…This is beyond you.

My desire to see the ideas contained within this article expounded upon is not simple. To proclaim an idea is one thing, to explain how you came to such a conclusion, and to share your findings with willing learners, is another. You may as well have called me stupid, and this is the internet.

Religion controls you by making you feel guilty
about your sexual desires even though it is natural, says OSHO

Religion creates celebration, not guilt. But the so-called
religions are more political than religious. Their whole idea, desire,
ambition, is how to dominate people, how to control people. And naturally,
guilt is one of the best mechanisms ever evolved to control people. Once people
start feeling guilty, they are in your control. All dictators do that, all
          politicians do that.

And your priest is just a politician behind the mask. They
have a hidden politics of how to dominate humanity, how to make slaves out of
people. And, of course, there is no better trick than creating guilt. It is a
          psychological technique.

          Sex Is Not Sin

How does it function? To create guilt you first have to create an impossible
ideal which cannot be fulfilled, which is inhuman. For example, in India they have
created guilt about sex. If you have any sexual desire, you start feeling like
a great sinner. Sex has been condemned.

Now sex is such a natural thing, like eating or breathing.
Only one thing is different about sex: it can be transcended. But there is
nothing intrinsically wrong about it. One can go beyond it. Sex is not sin. Sex
          is beautiful, healthy.

But if it is condemned then you have a great trick, a great
technique in your hands. Millions of people will be controlled through it
because they will not be able to get beyond it. In fact, the more they think it
is a sin, the less is the possibility of going beyond it – because to go beyond
one has to go through it. So, it is very cunning to keep people in sexuality
and keep them feeling guilty and keep them continuously afraid that they are
          doing something wrong.

When a person feels that he is doing something wrong, he
trembles inside. He cannot be a rebel. He cannot stand on his own, he knows he
is guilty. He is not good; he is not worthy enough of anything. He cannot hope
to be happy. He knows he is a sinner. Now you can manipulate this man; he is
available, he is ready to become a slave. This is psychological slavery.

You have taken away his self-respect, you have taken away
his worth. He thinks of himself as dirty – how can he love himself? How can he
respect himself? He will be a victim of anybody who wants to control him.
Everybody will control him because something immensely valuable has been
destroyed in him – his respect for himself. And he will remain miserable,
continuously miserable. How can you be happy if you don’t have any respect for
yourself? And such a natural thing as sex has become so difficult to get rid
of. Yes, people can transcend sex but nobody can get rid of it.

Let me tell you something. Just the other day, I was reading
that the psychologist Paul Cameron reports that males spend a great deal of
          time thinking about sex.

          Survey Says It All

In a survey of 4,000 people, he found that males between the ages of 12 and 17
think about sex once every two minutes. This rate continues into young
adulthood and drops to every five minutes in middle age, that is, 40 to 45; and
finally tails off to once every 10 minutes after the age of 65.

Females give thoughts to sex every two-and-a-half minutes as
teenagers, once every three minutes in young adulthood, once every 10 minutes
in middle age and once every 20 minutes after the age of 65.This survey is very
important. It shows how natural sex is. Now if you make people feel that this
is sin, you are destroying their respect for themselves.

All these religions which have created guilt in man have created
an irreligious world: anger is wrong, sex is wrong, joy in food is wrong,
laughter is wrong…all good things seem to be wrong. And then one goes on
repressing. And howsoever you repress, nature goes on asserting. You repress it
and it asserts. When it asserts and you have to do something against your mind,
then there is guilt – then you know that you have fallen again, you have
          committed the sin again.

Drop all guilt, fear, greed. Enjoy each moment of life as a
great blessing from existence. Sufis: The People Of The Path, Vol 1, courtesy:

I agree with you: I don’t believe sex is INHERENTLY beautiful in itself. That makes no sense. However, I don’t think that’s his point. He’s saying that most cultures have unhealthy attitudes toward sex, due to attachment and desire–the products of a wrong perception of the world around you.

What I have been trying to share with others but unable to say in the proper words… I am delighted to hear Osho speak to this insightfully.

Some readers are writing against Osho’s insight and some are writing against such people. Whenever I find people of these two categories , I suddenly tried to put my views forefront but then on the next moment someone inside me guided to remain silent and then I felt there’s nothing to say not even a single word. :)
Moreover those who have chosen to go against someone can’t go in favour- not even the best combination of words or speeches can change their attitude. Outonly thing which can make people to go to right path is our own heading towards it. I think some Osho lovers can recall the story of Buddha’s sanyasi who lived some days with a prostitute and make her sanyasin.
